Last year, a doctor diagnosed men who took sildenafil and a treatment for chest pain.
The doctor then looked at the man’s medical history, the man’s symptoms and the man’s treatment, and decided that erectile dysfunction was something he had a lot of to do with.
“I thought it was something he had a little bit of to do with. It just doesn’t add up to what he had a little bit of,” he said. “That’s why I’m concerned with your treatment.”
Dr. James McAvoy, a urologist at the University of Victoria, was not surprised by the doctor’s findings.
“There’s not a lot of data on sildenafil or any of the other medications that you can think of,” he said. “There’s also not a lot of data about how much of that has been from studies. There’s very little data on sildenafil. There’s not enough data.”
He noted that many doctors prescribe sildenafil to men who have some type of ED, such as those with a family history of premature ejaculation. A few years ago, he prescribed a pill to men with a family history of premature ejaculation.
“This is not a medical problem, it’s a medical issue,” McAvoy said. “It’s just a psychological issue. You may be worried about not having the time to talk about it with your doctor.”
A couple of years ago, he started talking to a doctor about getting some of his patients to take sildenafil. The men, who were suffering from erectile dysfunction, had to get help.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with me,’” he said. “I just couldn’t do it.”
He had two patients in the urology and men in general. His first, who was on a combination of sildenafil and Viagra, had a low risk of erectile dysfunction.
“I was like, ‘I’m not going to be able to do that, I need to see a doctor. I’m going to have to take Viagra. I’m going to have to take a pill. I’m going to have to take Viagra.’ ”
He was diagnosed with ED at the age of 26 and was prescribed sildenafil and the other drugs for the same conditions. His ED also involved some severe side effects including pulmonary hypertension, high blood pressure and abnormal vision, according to Dr. Peter Beggs.
“This is a very serious condition. It’s not something you take lightly,” he said.
The doctor prescribed sildenafil and other drugs for ED but never for any other reason, including to avoid a drug-induced heart problem. “The reason for this is because these drugs are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration,” Dr. McAvoy said.
He said most patients have not received any positive results in their treatment because of the drug’s side effects. But he said he had seen some patients with ED who had no other drugs. “I’ve seen a very low number of patients with ED who had no other drugs,” he said.
